Finance Director/ Controller, Newark Community Economic Development Corporation

The Finance Director will report to the CEO and President. The Finance Director/ Controller will spearhead accounting efforts as Newark CEDC continues to grow. A new position in the organization, the Director will have the opportunity to build the development function and take lead in all financially procedures.

Organization

Founded in 2007 and reorganized and renamed in 2014, Newark Community Economic Development Corporation (Newark CEDC), formerly known as Brick City Development Corporation (BCDC), is the primary economic development catalyst for the State of New Jersey’s largest city, Newark.  It is organized to retain, attract and grow businesses, enhance small and minority business capacity, and spur real estate development throughout the City’s 20 diverse neighborhoods. As a business development company whose sole client is the City of Newark, Newark CEDC collaborates with the Newark Department of Economic & Housing Development to initiate and execute economic development activities to produce and sustain economic growth, generate jobs and create wealth for the citizens of Newark.

Position

The Finance Director will report to the CEO and President. The Finance Director/ Controller will spearhead accounting efforts as Newark CEDC continues to grow. Core Responsibilities

  • Manage all financial aspects of NCEDC including accounting system and controls, compliance with all applicable laws, banking and financial reporting in keeping with GAAP
  • Coordinate closely with the audit committee of the board of directors and external auditors for the conduct of periodic financial reporting and audit
  • Maintain adequate accounting process, controls and workflow to facilitate proper financial accounting and reporting in keeping with GAAP
  • Prepare and administer annual operating budget for NCEDC
  • Oversee the administration of system of: coding and payment of invoices, Journal entries for the recording of transactions, general ledger activities, cash management, processing payroll and maintenance of accounting adequate system
  • Act as primary contact and administering the banking needs of NCEDC
  • Prepare monthly financial and operations reports for NCEDC board and the City of Newark as well as other stakeholders
  • Manage and provide periodic accounting reports for all fund received as fiscal agent on behalf of the City of Newark and other Grantees
  • Manage/Administer NCEDC small business and UEZ loan program in keeping with established policies and procedures
  • Administer/Supervise the Human Resources function of NCEDC in compliance of all laws to include the management of all NCEDC staff

  • Demonstrated knowledge of financial management principles
  • Knowledge of budgeting and cash flow management
  • Knowledge of accounting and general office software
  • Ability to create and assess financial statements and models
  • Ability to supervise a staff with varied assignments
  • Ability to take initiative and ownership of projects and see through to completion
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to complete time-sensitive projects

Qualifications

  • History of successful financial leadership experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an Accredited College or University in Accounting or Finance; Master’s degree preferred
  • CPA Certification
  • Minimum 10 years relevant work experience in a related field; five years in supervisory role
  • Experience working with a Board of Directors and an Executive Team
  • Understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (“GAAP”) and the ability to communicate with others that have varying levels of GAAP knowledge
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with income-producing real estate, corporate level financing, tax structuring, debt structuring, negotiating and overseeing loans, managing equity, lender and partner relationships, managing fund sourcing, cash forecasting and financial modeling
  • Significant experience in nonprofit financial management with multi-source funding
  • Ability to undertake and complete multiple tasks at the same time.

  • Superior management abilities.

 

Accounting Software:
Working knowledge of Sage MIP Not-For-Profit accounting software functionalities.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required.

Special Projects:
Perform various special projects, and prepare certain ad hoc reports for NCEDC Senior Management as will be required
