It's a new era in Newark!
With billions of dollars in real estate development under construction and in the pipeline, the city is seeing a renaissance and resurgence at a pace residents could only recently imagine. New additions to the downtown retail landscape include Gap, Nike, Starbucks, Chipotle and now Whole Foods. National and regional retail chains are realizing that there’s a market for their products, goods and services to be made in Newark.
Why now? Why Newark?
The city of 280,000 people sits at the heart of one of the wealthiest regions in the country. It has enviable assets that most urban leaders could only wish for. We have an international airport that handles 35 million passengers a year. Two train stations that provide 24-hour access to midtown and lower Manhattan on the busiest passenger rail line in the country. The third busiest port in the country feeding a transportation and logistics industry in a still heavily utilized industrial corridor. Seven major highways including three interstates expand the reach of businesses located in the city to 1.7 million residents in the region. More than 50,000 faculty, students and staff across our institutions of higher learning make us a college town. World class entertainment venues such as NJPAC, the Prudential Center and Newark Museum bring in hundreds of thousands of visitors to downtown.
The growing desire for urban and walkable environments that allow residents to live, work and play is bringing more attention to Newark’s neighborhoods. Newark's proximity to New York is attractive to Manhattan workers looking for a fun and affordable place to live. But we’re not a bedroom community or host to back office operations like Hoboken or Jersey City. With 140,000 jobs, we have 25% more than the next largest municipality and that’s because we are North Jersey’s urban center and the location of corporate giants like Panasonic, PSE&G, Audible.com, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield, Verizon and, of course, Prudential reflect that status. Newark is the place to be if your business wants to be a regional, state or world leader in its field.
